Therapy Dog Program Eligibility Criteria
Candidate Qualifications
To be considered for our therapy dog program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Service Background
- Must be a current or former first responder (firefighter, paramedic, EMT, police officer, dispatcher, or emergency medical personnel)
- Minimum of 2 years of service in emergency response role
- Both active-duty and retired personnel are eligible
Health & Diagnostic Requirements
- Clinical diagnosis of PTSD, anxiety disorder, or related condition by a licensed mental health professional
- Letter of recommendation from treating therapist, psychiatrist, or counselor endorsing the therapeutic benefit of a service animal
- Willingness to share relevant mental health information for appropriate dog matching
- Medical clearance confirming physical ability to care for and handle a dog
Living Situation
- Stable housing situation that permits pets
- Living environment suitable for a medium to large-sized dog
- Landlord approval documentation (if renting)
- Adequate space for the dog to exercise and play
Commitment Requirements
- Ability to commit to the full 8-week training program
- Willingness to participate in twice-monthly follow-up sessions for the first year
- Commitment to the dog’s ongoing care, including veterinary expenses, food, grooming, and exercise
- Financial stability to support the long-term needs of the animal
- Ability to provide 30 minutes of daily training reinforcement during initial placement period
Personal Readiness
- Demonstrated understanding of the responsibilities of dog ownership
- No history of animal abuse or neglect
- No felony convictions for violent crimes
- Sobriety from substances that would impair ability to care for or handle the dog
- Family/household member support for bringing a therapy dog into the home
Application Process
- Complete initial online application
- Submit supporting documentation (diagnosis verification, service history, recommendation letters)
- Participate in telephone screening interview
- Home environment assessment
- In-person evaluation and interview
- Matching assessment to identify suitable dog pairing
- Preliminary training session and final approval
Priority Considerations
While all qualified applicants are considered, priority may be given to:
- First responders whose symptoms significantly impact daily functioning
- Individuals who have tried other therapeutic interventions with limited success
- Those with strong support systems to help with dog care if needed
- Applicants demonstrating high motivation and commitment to the program
The First Responders Foundation evaluates each application holistically, considering how the specific needs of the first responder align with the temperaments and capabilities of our available therapy dogs.
Note: Meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program, as capacity is limited and matches are carefully considered to ensure success for both the first responder and the rescue dog.
